Reflexology
The way to harmony and health
by Stefanie Sabounchian, C.R.
When asked if they have ever had reflexology, people who have experienced
it light up. They remember how wonderful it was to feel the skilled
hands of a reflexologist.
Reflexology is the study, science and art of
using specific touch techniques on small
maps, closely resembling the shape of the human
body, found on the feet, hands and
outer ears. When health imbalances
occur in our body, blockages of different chemical types accumulate
in the corresponding reflexes located in the feet, hands and ears.
According to reflexologists, by gently breaking down this blockage,
the corresponding
part of the body is also likely to experience some
form of relief. Balance and health
often return to the affected areas.
What happens during a reflexology session? After
a brief health history is taken, you lie down on a cushioned reflexology
table, your shoes
and socks off. While the reflexologist spends an hour working on your
feet, hands and ears, you may experience waves of
relief taking you
deeper into profound relaxation. You feel aches and strains melt away.
Reflexology is deeply relaxing and helps reduce
the effects of stress on the body and emotions. Stress causes organs
and glands to become
either overactive or underactive. Reflexology helps to normalize the
body functions. There are many benefits frequently reported like: reduction
and elimination of pain, improved circulation, increased oxygen and
nutrient supply to the brain and body, and detoxification. A person
remains fully clothed during reflexology sessions; only shoes and socks
are taken off. Reflexology is
a safe way to bring a nurturing touch
for your health.
Three medical doctors are credited with discovering
reflexology. During the early 1900's, American doctors, William
Fitzgerald, M.D. and Joe
Shelby Riley, M.D., discovered an orderly arrangement of reflexes resembling
the shape of the human body, superimposed on the feet and hands. In
1957, Paul Nogier, M.D., a French neurophysiologist, made another startling
discovery, a map of the human body, resembling the shape of a baby
upside down in the fetal position, superimposed on the outer ear.
The Flocco Method (Foot Hand Ear Reflexology)
is an entirely new body of knowledge
in the field. By reflexing all
three systems, the
ears, hands and feet, the results are noticeably more effective than
working on just one of these three reflexology maps. Each system is
uniquely valuable for certain health imbalances. The ears are especially
valuable for quick relief of muscular tension and discomfort often
found in neck, shoulder, lower back, and for relief of many allergic
reactions. Hands help one to get a quicker
relief of headaches and
sinus problems. Feet are very useful for relief of Premenstrual Syndrome,
menstrual cramps and knee discomfort and more.
Reflexology is not intended to be a substitute
for proper medical care. It is a nurturing
gift through which you can help the body heal
itself through loving touch.
