Move and Live
If we were to look at any freeway in the world from a bird’s eye view, we would see an endless flow of cars, rather like ants, with people endlessly traveling here and there. If we’re not driving in cars, we’re traveling in planes, trains, buses and ships. We’re forever going somewhere, and then coming back again. As a race, we rarely find time to stand still.
Yet, we are taught through all the spiritual traditions, to move less, to be still and meditate, and here we are always moving around.
My own spiritual teacher, Dr. George King, Founder/President of The Aetherius Society, ever different from the mainstream, encouraged us to “Move and Live!” His teaching was to encourage people to get involved in the problems of others, give service and work on behalf of humanity, rather than holing up in a cave and meditating on our navels while the world crumbles around us. Not that we shouldn’t also be working towards enlightenment, but in these days the urgent need is also to work for others.
If we look around us, we will see there is much to be done. The world needs all our prayers, and all our efforts. The more service we give, the more quickly we move through evolution towards our own enlightenment.
We often get so caught up in the endless movement of everyday life that we think we don’t have time to go deeper. If we continue to skate on the surface, we will miss those things lurking beneath the surface. Eventually a “pothole” in the weave of our karmic pattern – in the form of a crisis – appears, and we disappear into it.
In my work as an astrologer and teacher, I meet hundreds of people around the world either by e-mail, telephone or in person. Many of these people have problems and, let’s face it; most of us do at least some of the time. I have found over the years that most problems can be boiled down to one thing, manifesting in a variety of ways. That is to our relationship to others – people as well as possessions. Most problems are about not getting what we want: not enough love, not enough money, not enough healthy sense of self, not enough fulfillment. Behind all these challenges is actually an insufficient relationship to Spirit or God or, as my husband, Gary, calls it: “the Divine Hook-Up.”
In other words, when we start looking outside ourselves for answers, things go wrong. The stronger our Divine hook-up, the more we can weather the outer storms. I am not saying that our problems will cease; in fact the deeper we go, the more challenges we face. Why? Because when we strengthen our relationship with God, we move through our karma far more quickly and, let’s face it; it can be a bumpy ride.
When this happens we must weather the storm, and embrace change when it comes. As Marianne Williamson says so eloquently in her book, “The Gift of Change: Spiritual Guidance for a Radically New Life”, HarperSanFrancisco, 2004: “Life as we knew it is passing away, and something new is emerging to take its place.”
We just can’t keep going forward, without facing change. It doesn’t make sense. We all have different lessons to learn and unless we embrace change, we can’t learn them.
Some of us may need to become more independent, while others need to learn about the art of compromise, diplomacy and teamwork. Now may be the time to learn courage, to go forth and speak truth, to be prepared to be unpopular no matter what the cost. At another time, the lesson is to listen and gain understanding. To flow like water, bend like a reed. Click here to read the balance of this article. |
